Who Was She?

She was unschooled,
married to a man of learning,
mother of four.
They were told by their father,
‘Just because you are educated,
and your mother is not,
it doesn’t put you above her.’
She lived her life,
secure in her beliefs,
her children unaware even of
their mother’s maiden name.
She left a gift
for a woman she would never meet.
Years later,
my mother has that gift,
a connection to her.
Who was she? I wonder.
She lived, always respected,
but in her family’s shadow.
(Content. Satisfied.)
She died, leaving behind
traces in memories,
two young girls named for her,
a gift to another,
and a wish in my heart.
